Oscar-winner Meryl Streep (pictured) turns 76 today,, while British actress Prunella Scales (the choc-loving Sybil Fawlty in TV’s Fawlty Towers), who is now battling dementia, turns 93. Kris Kristofferson, who died in Hawaii at the age of 88, on September 28, 2024, was born on this day in 1936.

Jimmy Sommerville of ’80s bands The Communards and Bronski Beat turns 64 today and Cyndi Lauper turns 72. Carson Daly, host of the original US version of The Voice, turns 52 today.

Comic Adam Sandler joined the Saturday Night Live team on this day in 1990, while both Judy Garland (born in 1922) and Fred Astaire (born in 1899) died on this day – The Wizard of Oz star in 1969 and the dance legend in 1987.

Victoria Principal (who played sulky Pam Ewing in Dallas) was 35 when she married plastic surgeon Harry Glassman, eight years her senior, on this day in 1985.

The catchy Brass in Pocket by The Pretenders was topping the South African singles chart on this day in 1980. It spent two weeks crowning the chart. Just saying…
