This Day in Showbiz History… July 5

ON THIS DAY IN 2025:

It was on this day in 1967 that Frank Sinatra (pictured) and screen star Ava Gardner called it quits after six years of marriage, while this day in 1950 marked the divorce, after more than four years of marriage, of screen legend Bette Davis and artist William Grant Sherry.

Today, in 2025, marked the passing of  Emeritus Professor Pieter Scholtz, a celebrated actor, playwright and novelist, who for 22 years headed the Department of Speech and Drama at the University of Natal in Durban (now UKZN). He died at Durban’s St Augustine’s Hospital after a period of declining health. He was 88.

On the music front, the Rolling Stones played a free concert in London’s Hyde Park on this day in 1969, while it is reported that on this day in 1980, Rod Stewart hit his head while on stage and knocked himself out.

It was on this day in 1993 that Icelandic singer Bjork released her first solo album, titled Debut.

Singer Huey Lewis (remember his hits Hip to Be Square and The Heart of Rock &Roll?) turns 65 today, while actress Edie Falco turns 62 and Adam Young, frontman of Owl City (remember the hit Fireflies?), turns 39.

Durban radio and media personality Terence Pillay, who died of renal failure on January 26, 2022, was born on this day, as was Ross Learmonth, lead vocalist of South African band Prime Circle.

The Hollies single, The Air That I Breathe, the band’s fourth No 1 hit, climbed to the top of the South African singles chart on this day in 1974, enjoying two weeks there. Just saying…
