On this day in 1984, Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli (pictured) appeared on Broadway as mother and daughter in The Rink, a musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb (creators of Chicago). The story of a family running a roller-skating rink, the show saw Rivera take her first Tony Award, after five previous nominations.

Singer-songwriter Carole King turns 83 today and actor Joe Pesci turns 82, while actress Mia Farrow turns 80 and actor Tom Hiddleston turns 43.

This day in 1966 marked the death, aged 82, of singer and comedienne Sophie Tucker, who appeared on Broadway in such revues as Ziegfeld Follies of 1909 and Earl Carroll’s Vanities of 1924. Bette Midler has long paid tribute to Tucker, sharing her bawdy jokes in TV and stage shows.

On this day in 2010, Lady Gaga topped the UK singles chart with Bad Romance. The song hit Britain’s top spot again after having spent a week there on December 19, 2009.
