ON THIS DAY IN 2025:
It was on this day in 1999, at the 41st Grammy Awards, that Celine Dion (pictured) took the statuettes for Song of the Year and Record of the Year – for My Heart Will Go On from Titanic. That was also when Lauryn Hill was named as best new artist and also took the award for Album of the Year, for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
This day in 2025 marked the death in New York of Grammy-winning singer Roberta Flack, whose hits included Killing Me Softly and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. She was 88.
On this day in 1955, On the Waterfront, starring Marlon Brando, took Golden Globe Awards for best picture and actor. That year also saw awards go to James Mason and Judy Garland (both for A Star is Born) and Grace Kelly (The Country Girl).
Birthdays? Barry Bostwick, who played nerdy Brad in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, turns 79 today, while Titanic actor Billy Zane turns 58.
Finally, Red, Red Wine by UB40 (a song written by Neil Diamond) rose to No 1 on the Springbok Radio Top 20 on this day in 1994 – and stayed there for 12 weeks. Just saying…
