This Day in Showbiz History… December 8

ON THIS DAY IN 2025:

Had he not died, aged 27, rocker Jim Morrison (pictured), of The Doors, would have turned 82 today.

Today also marks the passing of actor Ryan O’Neal, star of such films as Love Story, What’s Up Doc, The Main Event, Paper Moon and Barry Lyndon. He was 82 when he died of prostate cancer in California, on this day in 2023.

On this day, in 1949, Carol Channing performed Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend on the opening night of the musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at New York’s Ziegfeld Theatre. It went on to have 740 performances and turned Channing into an icon, reports Playbill.

Also, on this day in 2002, the Baz Luhrmann staging of the opera La Boheme opened on Broadway. Playbill reports that the show had 228 performances and won a special Tony Award for its three rotating casts of leads.

Meanwhile, rapper Nicki Minaj turns 43 today, while Oscar-winner Kim Basinger blows out 72 birthday cake candles and Sinead O’Connor blows out 59.

Enjoying its second and final week at the top of the Springbok Radio Top 40 chart this week in 1982 was Come On Eileen by Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Just saying…
