ON THIS DAY IN 2025:
The Christmas No 1 single in the UK on this day in 2025 was XMAS by Kylie Minogue, marking her first Christmas No 1. The UK Christmas Number 1 for 2024 was Last Christmas by Wham, an accomplishment that marked the 1984 song’s second consecutive year at the top of the singles chart – and it also made history as the first song to be a Christmas No 1 twice.
Wikipedia reports that the charity single, Do They Know It’s Christmas? has been the UK Christmas number one four times, for three generations of Band Aid and for the LadBaby parody in 2022. The original 1984 version of the song, by the way, is the second-best-selling single in UK history (behind Elton John and his 1997, Princess Di-focused version of Candle in the Wind), while Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is in third spot.
Famous people who died on this day include Charlie Chaplin (1977) and James Brown (2006), while celeb birthdays include Dido (54 today), Alannah Myles (67) and Bob James (86). Also, Annie Lennox of Eurythmics (pictured) turns 71 today.
On this day in 1962, To Kill a Mocking Bird, starring Gregory Peck, was released in cinemas, while on this day in 1973, The Sting, directed by George Roy Hill, and starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, premiered in Los Angeles and New York. It went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
The most popular single in South Africa on this week in 1979 was She’s In Love With You by Suzi Quatro. It crowned the chart for seven weeks. Just saying…
