ON THIS DAY IN 2025:

On this day in 1969, Oliver!, starring Mark Lester (pictured, and who turns 67 on July 11) took the Oscar for Best Picture  – and it wasn’t until Chicago, at the 2003 awards, that a musical took this coveted award again.

This day also marked the first and only tie in the Academy Awards’ Best Actress category – the award was shared by Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter and Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl.

Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore turns 80 today, actress Abigail Breslin turns 29 and Oscar-winner Adrian Brody turns 52. country singer Loretta Lynn, who died at the age of 90 in October of 2022, was born on this day in 1932.

Star of The Full Monty, Robert Carlyle, turns 64 today, while actress Julie Christie turns 85 today and actress Sarah Michelle Gellar turns 48.

Singer Percy Sledge died on this day in 2015. He was 73.

On this day in 1972, Son of My Father by Chicory Tip topped the South African Springbok Radio chart. It remained there for one week. Just saying…
