THE legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Cats, which is back in South Africa for the first time since 2009, is currently wowing Cape Town audiences before moving to Johannesburg’s Teatro theatre, at Montecasino, from January 17 to February 22.

Presented by Pieter Toerien Productions and GWB Entertainment, in association with Cape Town Opera, the new touring production of Cats – which is expected to also embark on an international tour in 2026, through to 2027 – is at Cape Town’s Artspace Opera House until January 11, before its Gauteng transfer. Tickets, available via Webtickets, range in price from R180 to R580 in Cape Town, and from R280 to R580 in Johannesburg.
The original production of Cats premiered in London in 1981. It is a sung-through musical based on the 1939 poetry collection, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, by T S Eliot, and tells of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles, and the night they make the “Jellicle choice” by deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
As of 2024, Cats remains the fifth-longest-running Broadway show and the eighth-longest-running London West End show.
The new South African production, which has been highly praised by reviewers, has a stellar local cast, including Cindy-Ann Abraham as Grizabella, Stephan van der Walt as Admetus/Macavity, Tannah Levick as Rumpleteazer, Dylan Janse van Rensburg (formerly the lead in the recent, touring Joseph) as Rum Tum Tugger, and Tshepo Ncokoane (formerly Frank N Furter in KickstArt’s recent hit, The Rocky Horror Show) in multiple roles, including the dapper Bustopher Jones, the old Gus, and the energetic Rumpus Cat.
The production maintains the original creative magic with choreography by the late Gillian Lynne and direction by Trevor Nunn, overseen by associate director Chrissie Cartwright.
