DURBAN darlings Lisa Bobbert and Aaron McIlroy will glossy up Durban’s festive season with two new stage shows – one in November at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and the other at the Northlands Bowling Club in December.

First up for the popular MacBob team will be Retro Fest, in which husband and wife Aaron and Lisa will team up with another married couple, Liam and Jane Magner, otherwise known as Veranda Panda. The show will run from November 6 to 17 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.
Get out your glow sticks and glitter balls – the high-octane nostalgia of the ‘Best of the Festivals’ of yesteryear is being honoured in this tribute show with live, mixed music and comedy. Retro Fest promises to offer a joyous tonic of life-affirming memories with a fresh new take on familiar characters and music.
Macbob and Veranda Panda will be re-inventing and adapting familiar elements of the ’70s and ’80s festival circuits. Violinist Jane will incorporate her special brand of contemporary fusion violin into some of the songs, and husband Liam will be doing live music mixes and comedy sketches with Lisa and Aaron, who have created a host of new characters and a fun playlist.
“It’s familiar but different,” says Aaron. “Our approach is comedy focused and taking something familiar and adapting it to make it feel new, reinterpreting some of the music with some modern-sounding remixes while remaining true to the original work. Festivals were a huge part of our youth. We want to honour our memories and the great music.”
Hits by Kate Bush, eVoid, Yazoo, Eagles, Bangles, Boney M, Jennifer Rush, Eurythmics, Freddie Mercury, Queen and Abba will feature in the show – and iconic tunes such as Video Killed the Radio Star, Funky Town, You Spin Me Round, Tainted Love, Holding onto a Hero, Sweet Dreams, Taxi Man, Dance Sum More and Hotel California.
The foursome is excited to be back together on stage again. Liam and Aaron performed together in KickstArt’s Little Shop of Horrors some years ago, and Lisa and Jane shared a stage in KickstArt’s I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Retro Fest will mark the first time all four are in a full show together.
Audiences are encouraged to dress up, festival style. There will be prizes for the best dressed! Note that there will also be a concession stand in the foyer to buy festival souvenirs. Book via Webtickets.
Meanwhile, Lisa and Bobbert are also to premiere a new show, Date Night, in association with the Rhumbelow Theatre, at Northlands Bowling Club at 50 Margaret Mayton Avenue, Durban North, from December 19 to 31.
Much is still under wraps about this production but Macbob has promised a fun-filled musical comedy-cabaret highlighting popular songs and their usual mix of crazy characters. With their trademark chemistry and irreverent humour, the duo promises to tackle the ups and downs of relationships, marriage and middle age in Date Night, which has been directed and choreographed by Daisy Spencer.
