……BY BILLY SUTER……
ONE of the best British bands ever will be saluted by one of Durban’s finest tribute bands at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Road, Umbilo, early next month. The show, titled Get Back, will also be staged at Northlands Bowling Club, Durban North, on Saturday, October 19.
The music of The Beatles will dominate the song-list of Get Back when seasoned group The Reals, under the musical direction of keyboardist and singer Dawn Selby, present the show in Umbilo at 7.30pm on Saturday, October 5, and 2pm on Sunday, October 6.
Good news is that SoSuterBill has four tickets to give away to one lucky person, for the 7.30pm Saturday performance. See the end of this post for details on how to enter the competition.
For Get Back, Dawn Selby and singer-guitarist Barry Thomson, bassist Andy Turrell and drummer Mali Sewell will share the stage with guest singer-guitarist Shaun Dragt. Tickets cost R200 each.
Another new show headed for the Rhumbelow soon – both at Umbilo and Durban North branches – is Music Through the Ages, in which the spotlight will be on the Saints Music Academy. Founded 16 years ago, after Music education was no longer subsidised by the Department of Education. The academy is based at St Andrew’s School inBloemfontein, but is a completely independent institution.
“Our department teaches piano, drums, bass, guitar and vocals, and so as soon as our students were able to play, we started forming bands to give students the opportunity to use their skills in a group,” says a spokesman.
“This has been a great success. We have bands with children from the age of eight. The skills they learn over and above the instrument itself is immeasurable. They learn how to play with others and work as a group, and to see how they grow as individuals in confidence as little humans is incredibly rewarding.”
These talented students do covers of all types of genres – from Elvis Presley, The Troggs and Gloria Gaynor tp The Cranberries, Meghan Trainor, OutKast and Billie Eilish to name a few. They also perform some of their original songs.
The academy’s top team of entertainers has toured throughout the country and has taken part in various Battle of the Bands competitions.
Now a mixed-bag programme of music will have three Rhumbelow performances in Durban – the first at 2pm and 7.30pm on Monday, September 23, at the Umbilo theatre, where there special price of R100 for pensioners and students. The final performance, at Durban North’s Northlands Bowling Club, is scheduled for 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 24 (Heritage Day), when tickets will cost R160).
Meanwhile, also heading for Rhumbelow stages soon is Texas to South Africa, a tribute to the music ofStevie Ray Vaughan and Dan Patlansky, performed by a Durban band called Good Trouble.
This show will be presented at the Umbilo Rhumbelow at 7.30pm on September 27 and 28, and at 2pm on Sunday, September 29. Then Texas to South Africa will be staged at Northlands Bowling Club – at 7.30pm on Saturday, October 5. Tickets for each show cost R200.
Formed in 2023 by lead singer Andrew Miller, a local music teacher, Good Trouble initially took shape as a showcase for his students’ recital. A great response prompted the group to step onto larger stages.
With guitarists Andre Adkins and Connor Jensen. bassist Lucian Young and drummer Matthew David, Good Trouble is now dedicated to reigniting the passion for blues and blues rock.
