BY BILLY SUTER
JOSEPH Clark, one of the original stars of the ahead-of-its-time Queen at the Opera, staged at Durban’s Playhouse Opera theatre in the early 1990s, is to return to that theatre for two performances only in May. And great news is that a SoSuterBill.com follower will win four tickets to attend the first performance.
For a chance to win the complimentary tickets for four people see entry details at the end of this post.
A veteran musical theatre king, Joseph Clark performs The Music of Queen at the Playhouse Opera at 7pm on Friday, May 17, and 2.30pm on Saturday, May 18.
In 1991, in the heyday of Durban’s musical theatre global reign, Clark, together with Sam Marais, Luciano Zuppa and a host of other stars, made theatre magic with the music of Queen at the Opera. That show, directed by Geoffrey Sutherland, delighted a generation of performers and audiences and inspired a slew of productions, films and revues in its wake.
Now Clark is back to keep the spirit of Queen’s music alive for a new generation of music lovers. Having performed Queen’s music for over three decades, his latest show boasts an extensive song list, including hits such as Somebody to Love, Another One Bites the Dust, Under Pressure, You Take My Breath Away, The Show Must Go On, We Will Rock You, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and, of course, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Clark, who also plays piano, performs alongside guitar virtuoso Axe Lourens and top-quality backing tracks.
American-born Clark spent most of his years performing mainly outside of SA, in The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Switzerland, The Middle East, the US, numerous African countries and, most recently, in Freddie Mercury’s birthplace, Zanzibar.
Born in Amarillo, Texas, he initially trained as a ballet dancer and performed in America as a principal dancer before joining the Performing Arts Companies PACT and later Napac at The Playhouse Theatre in Durban. He went on to win fame as a dancer, singer and actor.
Tickets for The Music of Queen cost R250 each. Booking is via Webtickets.
