TWO terrific new soft-cover cook books, both by South African food queens, have been published by Human & Rousseau – and even better news is that one lucky SoSuterBill subscriber will win a copy of each!
Cupcakes and Couscous, selling for about R450, is a new cookbook by Teresa Ulyate. Since 2013, she has had a popular food blog of the same title as her book, and regularly appears on SABC3’s Expresso morning show as a guest cook.
“This new book is a reflection of my cooking and eating styles – a happy combination of nostalgia-inspired dishes and achievable new recipes,” says Ulyate.
“I believe in balancing wholesome nourishment and special treats. From morning munching to fuss-free dinners and everything in between, these comforting recipes were created to be prepared and enjoyed together.”
The book, with good photography accompanying each of the 70 or so recipes, offers pantry staples, hosting tips and menus. It covers everything from braais and special occasions to simple suppers, snacks and sweet treats.
Also new on the shelves is Cape Malay Cooking by ever-popular Fatima Sydow, which is subtitled My Story, My Heritage. This 192-pager sees Fatima take us on a nostalgic journey through the many important feasts celebrated in the Cape Malay culture. It sells for about R395.
Starting with old-school family recipes from her upbringing on the Cape Flats, she shares stories of Ramadaan, Labarang and community weddings, and shares fond recollections of the festive season with Gatti’s ice creams and Bashew’s cool drinks.
In between all these memories are recipes for a wide variety of tasty dishes, including salt and pepper chicken, her father’s favourite sugar bean curry, Ramadaan boeka plates, Labarang sweet treats to enjoy with a cup of tea, puds for the whole family, and her ultimate festive season braai ideas.
