……BY BILLY SUTER……

DURBAN’S Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Road, Umbilo, has a feast of stage and film shows scheduled for the next few weeks, and among them is the acclaimed Julie Andrews – Uncut, starring Alison Hillstead, an East London performer new this cosy theatre.

A tribute to the music and memories of Oscar-winning British singer-actress, Julie Andrews, the show is scheduled for a weekend of performances: at 7.30pm on Friday, December 9; 2pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, December 10; and 2pm and 5pm on Sunday, December 11.

Good news is that SoSuterBill has four tickets to give away to the 7.30pm performance on Friday, December 9. See the end of this post for competition entry details.

Written and directed by Amanda Bothma, Julie Andrews – Uncut has Nathan Johannisen as musical director. He also provides piano accompaniment for Alison Hillstead, who has worked at Disney World, attended master classes at New York Film Academy, and is now well-known among connoisseurs of East London’s Guild Theatre.

The show, which runs an hour without an interval, was a recent National Arts Festival success and also drew good houses at the 2022 Wela Kapela Cabaret Festival and in a season at Cape Town’s Theatre.

Julie Andrews spent her childhood performing on the Vaudeville circuit, singing and dancing, two shows a day, six days a week, alongside Pops and Barbara Andrews. Little Julie would stand on a crate to sing a duet with Pops while mom Barbara accompanied them on piano.

On 1 November 1948, a 13-year-old Andrews became the youngest solo performer ever to be seen in a Royal Variety Performance. But all was not well in the Andrews family. Pops’ drinking was out of control. He was a violent drunk, completely unemployable. So young Julie became the sole provider for the bickering Andrews family.

Vaudeville was her training ground, Broadway made her and Hollywood immortalised her.

Julie Andrews – Uncut tells the of the trials and tribulations that shaped Julie Andrews in to a legend, star of such films as Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, Star!, Darling Lili and Thoroughly Modern Millie, and stage hits such as My Fair Lady and Camelot.

Tickets for the Rhumbelow Theatre performances cost R180 each. Book at Computicket or mail theatre manager Roland Stansell at roland@stansell.co.za

Note that the Rhumbelow Theatre has seating at tables and opens an hour before the show for a bring-your-own picnic meal (light meals may also be bought at the theatre). All beverages must be bought at the theatre pub.
