……BY BILLY SUTER……

SIMPLY looking at the photos of her colourful confections is enough to get one salivating, so imagine getting to taste the wonderful treats offered in Baking for Profit or Pleasure, the fourth  cookbook by Christine Capendale, now available through Human & Rousseau.

Great news is that SoSuterBill.com has a copy of this R420 recipe book to give away today. See the end of this post for competition entry details.

A Hermanus- based foodie who holds a degree in Home Economics and Dietetics from Stellenbosh University, Capendale is widely known for her exceptional baking and her practical cooking classes.

Her new large softcover is a reworking of her very first book of the same name which, published a while ago, sold out. Now it is updated with even more tips, info and inspiration.

It offers 80 recipes aimed at beginners and experienced bakers alike, and offers valuable advice on how one can set about building a business from home baking, Capendale’s advice covering everything from licencing and permits to branding, marketing, packaging, equipment and calculating costs.

Capendale points out in her book’s forward that she delights in simplicity and is known for developing recipes that are easy to follow, quick to make and delicious to eat.

“Nowadays many people are baking for extra income or even to support their families. It is those reasons that inspired me to do a follow-up book” she adds.

Recipes in the book vary from sensational cakes to savoury platters, traybakes and classic South African favourites. You will also find recipes for gluten-free, vegan and low-sugar bakes.

I particularly like the like the look (and  thought) of Biltong and Chive Muffins with Feta Crumble, and  Date and Walnut Brioche Buns. Or Malva Cupcakes with Milk Tart Frosting. Or the delights in the pie section – not least Italian Meringue and a yummy-sounding  Butternut  and Spinach Pie with Goat’s Milk Cheese and Pine Nuts.

There’s lots more – everything from Salted Caramel Fudge to Apple and Date Loaf with Tahini Topping, and Roasted Blueberry Cheesecake.
