Win Fatima Sydow’s new cook book

……BY BILLY SUTER……

TWO colourful new cookbooks by South African talents are new on shelves from Human & Rousseau – and good news is that one lucky follower of the SoSuterBill site will win a copy of one of the books: Fatima Sydow Cooks.

This 192-page softcover, selling for about R360, is the third recipe book from Cape-based Sydow. It follows her self-published The Journey of Cape Malay Cooking and, following the success of her Facebook cooking page and subsequent TV show with her twin sister Gadija, the delightful Cape, Curry and Koeksisters.

To be in line for a copy of Fatima Sydow Cooks, which carries the same title as Sydow’s Facebook cooking page, see the competition details at the end of this post.

Also new on the shelves is the 264-page Meat: The Ultimate Guide by Annelien Pienaar, author of Boerekos with a Twist, but more about that later.

First Fatima Sydow Cooks… cooking from (and for) the soul is what is on offer inthis latest offering from the Cape Malay cooking queen. She highlights easy, accessible recipes, some of her fondest food memories and a few surprises.

The amiable cook offers a wide variety of delights, some of her surprises among the book’s 90 recipes including turning a lamington into a cake, a roti into a curry pie, and Peppermint Crisp tart into a strawberry delight.

Filled with bright photographs and easy-to-follow instructions, the book opens with recipes for breads and pastries (including vetkoek, croissants and garlic naan) before covering sauces, salsas and dips. We are then into spice and comfort foods, a section including recipes for cabbage curry, green bredie, samp and beans, and roti and curry pie.

Fish dishes and special-occasion seafood recipes follow, the rich and decadent Prawn Chaat most catching my attention, along with the oven-baked kingklip with honey and lemon sauce.

Chicken, beef and lamb recipes follow (the oxtail looks well worth trying), after which the book presents a section of salads, snacks and light meals. We are then on to puds, where you will find recipes for baked cheesecake, three-egg milk tart, buttermilk pancakes, pumpkin pie, sago pudding, carrot cake, fudgy chocolate brownies and the yummy  strawberry crisp fridge tart.

Moving on to Meat: The Ultimate Guide by Annelien Pienaar, a chunky softcover which sells for about R380.

This well-presented, comprehensive guide with photographs contains everything you would ever want to know about meat, presenting more than100 recipes for beef, lamb, mutton, pork, poultry, offal and game.

There are also recipes for marinades, flavoured salts and oils to complement the cuts, sauces, seasonings, stocks and gravies that pair well with meat.

Pienaar, who is a food scientist, lecturer, farmer and mother, also offers descriptions of the different meat cuts, their uses and the most suitable cooking method.

We also get useful information about the nutritional value and ageing of meat, the terminology used and handy conversion tables. There are also tips and tricks to add flavour and ensure tenderness.
