THE world’s premier theatrical ice skating company, The Imperial Ice Stars, returns to Johannesburg’s Teatro Theatre at Montecasino, from December 6 to January 11, with a spectacular new show, Peter Pan on Ice.

Even better news is that sosuterbill has four sets of double tickets to give away to the 7.30pm performance on Friday, December 6. See the competition entry details at the end of this story to enter and stand to win this great prize!

Please note that tickets cannot be changed for another date .

Peter Pan on Ice offers a journey to Neverland laden with magic and make-believe, showcasing 23 former World, European and National Championship-level skaters. Collectively, the entire cast holds more than 250 competition medals and will bring their athletic and artistic talents to retell J M Barrie’s well-loved story.

The show will have Johannesburg performances at 7.30pm every Tuesday to Friday, at 3pm and 7.30pm on Saturdays, and 2pm and 5.30pm on Sundays. Tickets range in price from R150 to R475, and booking is at Computicket.

Join Peter – the boy who never grows up – as he and Tinker Bell whisk Wendy Darling and her brothers from their London home off on a magical journey to Neverland. Watch as they enjoy thrilling adventures with the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily and the Mermaids, encountering the evil Captain Hook, his pirates and a very hungry crocodile!

Set to an original score, the show features innovative choreography as well as powerful story-telling created by artistic director Tony Mercer, widely regarded as the world’s leading creator of theatre-on-ice.

Peter Pan on Ice features a 44-member company, including performers, technicians and a doctor, with a further 17 people required in each venue.

Six languages are spoken on tour, with rehearsals and notes given mainly in Russian, while the backstage crew speaks mainly in English.

The performers rehearse nine or more hours a day, six days a week, for seven  weeks to pull the show together, and they rehearse for three hours each day before a show.

Interestingly, there have been five weddings and three babies from people who have met while on tour with the Imperial Ice Stars.

The production makes use of 25 pairs of skates and 50 sets of blades are carried with the troupe on tour. To freight the whole show, the weight is about   25 000kg, the equivalent of 70 grand pianos.

Some 14 tons of ice are created in the production – the same weight as nearly three elephants – while 2500 litres of anti-freeze are used (enough to fill 100 car-cooling systems).

The ice reaches temperatures of -15 C, three times colder than your household freezer.

“We use 15km of pipes underneath the ice rink to distribute the anti-freeze, and in a theatre, the ice rink takes more than 140 man-hours to build but only 30 man-hours to dismantle,” says a spokesman.

“The show always requests a hot water supply when ‘dressing’ the ice rink because hot water freezes quicker than cold, the Mpemba effect. Also of note is that in the last year, during our show dismantling, there have been approximately 26 500 shovelfuls of ice deposited from the stage.”
