HOW would you like to be in line to be among FIVE winners of FOUR tickets each to attend the 8pm performance on Friday, October 18, of Forever Plaid, the fun musical which, featuring some of the best music from the 1950s, runs from October 10 to November 3 at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino in Johannesburg?

For details on how to enter the competition to win four tickets, see the end of this story.

Highlighting singing in 1950s four-part harmony, Forever Plaid showcases the upbeat music made popular by artists and groups such as Perry Como, Eddie Fisher, The Four Lads and The Ames Brothers, to mention but a few.

The New York Post reviewer labelled the Forever Plaid musical as “screamingly funny, entirely enchanting, utterly entertaining and awesome”.

The South African production of the show, which features a book by Stuart Ross, is presented by the hard-working VR Theatrical company, now celebrating its third year on the showbiz scene. The team gave us such hits as Rock of Ages, Avenue Q, A Christmas Carol and Here’s to You – The Simon and Garfunkel Songbook.

Forever Plaid is directed and choreographed by Jaco van Rensburg, with musical direction by Wessel Odendaal, It has Daniel Keith Geddes as associate musical director, while scene and lighting design is by Dennis Hutchinson. Wardrobe is by Martine Hesselberg.

“Journey back to a time when cars had enormous fins and harmonising bands were all the rage. You’ll be humming along with the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s and rollin’ in the aisles from the delightful patter of the original clean-cut boy band – The Plaids!,” says a show spokesman.

The musical tells the story of Jinx, Sparky, Francis and Smudge, four young male singers who landed their first big gig at an airport bar in 1964.  But on the way to pick up their tuxes, they are slammed broadside by a busload of Catholic teenagers.

That is where the fun-filled story begins, as the boys are stuck in limbo and given a second chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the concert that never was. Before they may ascend into eternity…

The cast includes Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri as Smudge. Yamikani featured in The CoLab Network’s Swingin’ Christmas at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre. Soon after, he was understudying the title role in The Mandela Trilogy with The Cape Town Opera which toured to Germany, Italy, Ireland and the UK.

Other highlights include portraying Donkey in the People’s Theatre production of Shrek Jr., King Magnum in KickstArt’s Production of Puss in Boots and ensemble in VR Theatrical’[s Rock Of Ages.

He played Gary Coleman in VRT and Kosie Smit’s production of Avenue Q at Montecasino and most recently won a Naledi Award for potraying Harpo in The Color Purple at the Joburg Theatre, a role he will reprise again in 2020.

Danny Meaker, who portrays Francis, is a passionate performer that has been on stage for 13 years as a musician and two years in theatre.  He studied classical singing at Royal Schools, and sang and toured with the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir as well as the South African Youth Choir.

Throughout 2018 Danny appeared in productions at The National Children’s Theatre, namely Underneath The Magical Moon, The Pied Piper and Charlotte’s Web.

Musanete Sakupwanya, who plays Jinx, has shared the stage with the likes of Nataniel, Corlea, Magdalene Minaar, and performed all over South Africa with the Charl du Plessis Trio, performing The Gershwin Songbook.

After a decade of jazz, he launched into other genres, including opera and rock music as part of the Sony-signed band, Newton’s 2nd Law.

Musanete performed with Cape Town Opera in The Mandela Trilogy.  He was recently nominated for a Fleur du Cap Award for playing Nelson in Calling Us Home. Musanete also lectures in Singing at the University of Pretoria’s Drama department.

Tiaan Rautenbach, who has been cast as Sparky, graduated with a BA (Hons) in Drama from the University of Pretoria in 1999 and soon played Peter in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Numerous stage musicals followed, including Fame, The Full Monty and Footloose.

He has also been seen in many local TV series, and his proudest moment on screen was the SAFTA-nominated sketch comedy show, Kompleks, which he co-wrote and in which he starred.

In 2016, Tiaan received a Naledi Award nomination for his role in the pantomime, Aspoestertjie.  He spent the next 11 years travelling the country with touring productions for the Barnyard Theatre, and in 2017 he furthered those travels to the Mediterranean on TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 2.

Apart from performing, Tiaan spends his time strumming his ukulele and rocking out with his band Mamba Pistol.
