ONE of South Africa’s most hilarious and leggy drag legends, Lilly Slaptsilli, formerly of the hit lip-sync duo Mince, has now ventured into standup comedy with I’m Gagging, a colourful show that has been packing them in weekly in Cape Town.
Now the show, which also features a splash or two of the lip-sync fun for which Lilly is famous, is coming to Durban’s Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Road, Umbilo – at 8pm on Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19, and 2pm on Sunday, October 20.
The alter ego of Clive Allardyce, Lilly offers easy comedy, sometimes with outrageous actions and expressions, as well as a variety of accents, that changes from time to time, as do her outfits and wigs.
When I caught the show in Cape Town earlier this year, mirth was milked from topics including begging Bergies, insomnia, Jewish princesses appreciating a freebie, and the differences between gay and straight airline stewards.
Lilly also raised smiles with chat about an exploding suitcase of drag queen outfits; naughty teen boys causing havoc on a plane; jockeys; traffic cops and the time she was almost arrested in Namibia for her bird-seed filled boobs.
It’s camp, it’s clever and it’s commendable – and the party continues after the show with Lilly mingling among her guests and encouraging them to pose with her for photos on her little stage. She invariably posts these happy snaps on her Facebook page later.
