A FORMER Top 16 South African Idols finalist from 2011, Erin Fourie, is the main attraction at the fortnightly Music in the Hills (MiTH) event being presented today (Wednesday, July 31) at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm, Knoll Drive, Hilton.

Doors to the semi-open-mic music club open at 6pm and the music flows from 7pm. Entrance is R40 at the door.

Fourie has been playing guitar and singing since she was 13 and is now trying to master the ukulele.

Performing at MiTH from 7pm to 7.40pm today will be the Howick High School Band led by their charismatic and eccentric teacher, Mark Houston.

Next up, until 8.20pm, will be the Kristen Koning Band, an alternative folk group formed in the KZN Midlands in June. It is comprised of Kristen Koning on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Skippy Kubheka on lead guitar, Dev van Rooyen on bass, and Nerissa Pillay on backing vocals.

They perform original music written by Kristen, as well as covers in Afrikaans and English, with inspiration from Mumford and Sons, Arctic Fire, Tame Impala and Kings of Leon.

From 8.20pm to 9pm, the spotlight will be on Mercury Mind, an alternative indie duo from Pietermaritzburg comprising Josh Gilliver on drums and Ryan Woodgate on guitar and vocals. Their original sound ranges “from clean and chilled to harder rock songs”, while influences include Red Hot Chili Peppers and Twenty One Pilots.

The Reals – Mali Sewell, Dawn Selby, Jason Andrew and Barry Thomson – perform in Kloof this weekend

THE Rhumbelow Theatre at Tina’s Hotel in Beryldene Road, Kloof, presents a revival of The Reals hit, Laurel Canyon, this weekend – at 8pm on Friday and Saturday (August 2 and 3) and 2pm on Sunday (August 4).

The showband entertainment celebrates the area that became one of rock music’s most mythic neighbourhoods. This is where Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young first folded their voices into one beautiful harmony; where Frank Zappa welcomed artists including Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger to parties at his infamous ‘Log Cabin’ in 1968.

Laurel Canyon was the inspiration for The Doors’ Love Street, the Mamas and the Papas12:30 (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon), CSNY’s Our House and an entire album by British blues legend John Mayall.

It’s where music-business legends David Geffen, Jac Holtzman and Elliot Roberts helped build the recording careers of the singer-songwriters who defined the very essence of the ’60s California sound.

Tickets cost R150 each (R130 for pensioners) and booking is at Computicket or by calling Roland at 082 499 8636.
