WHAT does popular actor and musical theatre star Malcolm Terrey have in common with a shoe factory manager?
The answer is the musical Kinky Boots, a show winning rave reviews at Cape Town’s Fugard Theatre, in which Terrey will play the part of shoe factory manager George from July 21 to August 6, then again from October 14. He will be replacing Ralph Lawson, who has other commitments on those dates.
Presented by Eric Abraham and The Fugard Theatre, this Kinky Boots is the first non-replica production of the multiple Tony Award-winning musical. The run at The Fugard Theatre was extended to October 27 within two weeks of the production opening.
Terry has performed with various UK repertory theatre companies, and has toured South Africa and internationally in productions such as The Mousetrap, The Sound of Music, Dirty Dancing, Show Boat, We Will Rock You and The Phantom of the Opera.
Other South African credits include Cinderella at the Joburg Theatre, Tom-Foolery at Theatre on the Square, The Merry Widow at the Pretoria State Theatre, Grin and Bare It at Carnival City and Ying Tong at Theatre on the Bay and Montecasino.
Terry has been seen on film and television in presentations such as Young Leonardo and I Claudius for the BBC and Take a Break on SABC3.
Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots was first brought to life on the big screen in 2005 before being transformed into a hit musical, winning six Tonys and three Olivier Awards.
The musical features a Tony-winning score by Cyndi Lauper and a book by four-time Tony winner, Harvey Fierstein. It is the winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, Tony Award for Best Original Score, Tony Award for Best Choreography and Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
The Fugard Theatre’s Kinky Boots features direction by Matthew Wild, musical direction by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and choreography by Louisa Talbot. Costume design is by Birrie Le Roux, set design by Paul Wills and lighting design by Tim Mitchell. Sound design is by Mark Malherbe.
A stellar local cast is led by Darren Craig (Grease, High School Musical) as shoe factory owner Charlie Price and Earl Gregory (Into the Woods, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat) as drag queen Lola.
The story sees Charlie Price reluctantly inheriting his father’s shoe factory which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos.
Kinky Boots is performed at The Fugard Theatre at 8pm Tuesdays to Saturdays with a matinee at 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets, starting in price from R180, can be booked directly through The Fugard Theatre box office on (021) 461 4554 or via The Fugard Theatre’s website at www.thefugard.com
