THIS week marks the start of another delightful children’s production by Durban’s award-winning KickstArt theatre company – a production of E B White’s Charlotte’s Web.

And even better news is that one lucky subscriber to this site will win four tickets (valid for two adults and two children) to attend the official opening performance at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at 7pm on Friday, June 14.

See the end of this story for competition entry details – but move fast as the winner will be notified shortly after 12 noon tomorrow (Tuesday, June  11). Please note that the four tickets are only for the performance this Friday, June 14, so please check you are available for that date before entering.

Charlotte’s Web, designed and directed by Greg King, will be performed until July 7.

King’s enchanting stage adaptation of the popular E B White book tells the tale of Wilbur, a prize-winning piglet, and his unique friendship with an extraordinary barn spider, named Charlotte. When Wilbur is in danger, Charlotte helps him by writing messages in her web.

Considered a classic in children’s literature and enjoyed by adults as well as children, the book, in 2000, was listed by Publishers Weekly as the bestselling children’s paperback of all time.

The KickstArt production stars Mthokozisi Zulu (fresh from playing the theatre manager in Curtain Up! At the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre), Belinda Henwood, Lyle Buxton, Cara Roberts, T-Bone Hlahane and Bryan Hiles.

The original story was illustrated with beautifully rendered, now iconic artwork by Garth Williams which inspired the animated feature released in 1973, and a live-action film version of the original story, released in 2006.

There is also a popular video game based on this adaptation.

The story was apparently inspired by White’s encounter with a real pig which he unsuccessfully attempted to save.  He also met a real spider, which he called Charlotte Epeira and was immortalised as the heroine of his novel.

Tickets for Charlotte’s Web range in price from R120 to R180 (R100 to R160 for children, students and pensioners). Booking is at Computicket
