IF YOU have never seen Durban’s grand-daddies of lip-sync drag, you’d better hurry – the old ‘gals’ are about to hang up their boas and falsies with a final parting shot!

Yep, Durban’s The Family Players troupe, which has spent more than 30 years treading the boards, mostly in shows in aid of charity and fund-raisers for the aged, will present its last show, Adieu, at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Road, Umbilo. Dates to note are 8pm on May 24 and 25, and 2pm on May 26.

Tickets cost R150 (R130 for pensioners). Book at Computicket or by calling 082 499 8636.

Good news is that SoSuterBill has eight tickets to give away to the May 24 performance, so enter the competition (details on how to enter appear at the end of this story).

“I think The Family Players have had a good innings with the shows we have put on at the Rhumbelow Theatre over the past 18 years. We opened the Rhumbelow in June 2001 with a drag show called Tipsy Tarts,” reminisces Roland Stansell, a longtime member of the drag troupe and also the manager and entertainment co-ordinator for the Rhumbelow Theatre franchise.

Many Family Players shows in the earlier days were staged at the Tafta Hall in Durban and also at many other retirement facilities. Members have come and gone over the years but the troupe has only four members now, Derek Pearce and Greg Baptie being from the original lineup.

The troupe is calling it a day with Adieu as both Pearce and Baptie are soon to leave Durban, leaving only Stansell and Allan Quihampton.

“But  Allan and I  may still pop our heads out occasionally, doing shows with singers,” says Stansell.

Adieu is a fun look at the history of The Family Players and integrates songs and shows from the past 18 years.

“We will be joined by Anthony Stonier, who will be providing the links for the evening, and we will have Belinda Dolphin on vocals. She has also been in many of our shows over the years,” explains Stansell.

Tickets cost R150 each (R130 for pensioners and students with cards) and booking is at Computicket or by ringing 082 499 8636.
