FOR the seventh time, America’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences overlooked the stellar talents of Golden Globe-winner Glenn Close in the Best Actress category – last night giving the Oscar for best actress of the year to Britain’s Olivia Colman, for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite.
The 45-year-old Colman gave a fine performance in the film, and offered a hilarious acceptance speech at the 91st Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, but that did not dampen this writer’s disappointment over Close missing out yet again on a golden statuette.
Close had been nominated for her title role in The Wife, for which she received this year’s Golden Globe Award for best actress earlier in this year, and was considered a shoo-in for the award this year.
The Best Picture category also saw a big surprise – Green Book, about a black musician and his white chauffeur, took the award over hot favourites Roma, which took the Best Foreign Language Film statuette, and Bohemian Rhapsody, which took the award for Egyptian actor Rami Malek in his role as music star Freddie Mercury.
Roma also took Oscars for Alfonso Cuaron as best director and for his cinematography, while Green Book also took awards for supporting actor (Mahershala Ali) and original screenplay. The award for best supporting actress went to Regina King, for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk.
Lady Gaga won an Oscar for her song Shallow, from A Star Is Born.
This is the full list of nominations with the winners in each category listed in bold italics.
