IN CELEBRATION of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (KZNPO) launching its summer season on Valentine’s Day – Thursday, February 14 – SoSuterBill has a special prize to offer.

Up for grabs is a romantic musical evening for two, the prize being one Royal Hotel double coffee and cake/dessert voucher to enjoy a pre-concert treat, as well as two tickets to attend the KZNPO Valentine’s Day Concert in the Durban City Hall at 7.30pm that day. This is the opening concert of the 2019 summer season which runs weekly until March 7.

That’s not all – the prize also includes a box of Lindt chocolate balls to enjoy during the concert.

Details on how to enter the competition appear at the end of this story.

Acclaimed young Cape Town conductor, Brandon Phillips, who is also resident conductor of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, launches the season on Valentine’s Day.

Opening the concert will be Glinka’s dashing Overture to his opera, Ruslan and Ludmila – a perfect choice of Valentine’s-inspired music.

Conductor Brandon Phillips.

The opera is based on an epic fairytale poem by Alexander Pushkin which tells of the abduction by an evil wizard of Ludmila, the daughter of the Prince of Kiev, on the eve of her wedding – and the ensuing attempts by her three suitors to rescue her. The poem culminates with brave Knight Ruslan finding her, rescuing her and winning her hand in marriage.

This will be followed by the debut from one of Europe’s frontline new generation stars, young soloist Alexander Gilmann, who will give a rare account of Erich Korngold’s dazzling 1947 Violin Concerto.

Two contrasting works by Sir Edward Elgar take up the second half of the evening – his rarely performed Froissart concert overture, and his Enigma Variations.

Tickets for the KZN Philharmonic’s World Symphony Series 2019 Summer Season are available at Computicket. Call 0861 915 8000 or book online at www.computicket.com.
