POPULAR showbiz personality Ian von Memerty is soon to return to Durban’s Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre in a new musical comedy, Common & Class, also featuring versatile drummer-guitarist-comedian Gino Fabbri.

More good news is that SoSuterBill is offering three sets of double tickets to attend the opening performance at 8pm on February 6. Information on how to enter the competition appears at the end of this article.

Von Memerty (Strictly Come Dancing, SA’s Got Talent and A Handful of Keys) “reluctantly” teams up with the unashamed Philistine from De Aar, Gino Fabbri (Gino Fabbri is Completely Nuts), for an outrageous musical comedy that will be in Durban until February 17.

Described as rollercoaster of musical contradictions, the show sees ‘the ‘battle of the twits’ moving effortlessly from rock to Rocky Horror, boeremusiek to Broadway and country to classical, even sharing a masterclass on how not to look sexy on the dancefloor along the way.

Von Memerty has been variously described as “the English dictionary definition of showbusiness” and “a confused eclectic”. He has received 15 national theatre awards and been nominated a further 17 times.

Eastern Cape-based Fabbri is a favourite on the Johannesburg corporate entertainment circuit, where he regularly acts as interactive MC and plays multiple funny characters over the course of an evening.

As owner of the nationally successful production company Centrestage, Fabbri approached Von Memerty last year and the pair produced a terrific Elton John show together which toured the Eastern and Western Cape.

With Fabbri himself on drums and Von Memerty bringing down the house each night as the flamboyant Elton John, the pre-show backstage banter and one-upmanship which ensued paved the way for their natural collaboration.

Performances are scheduled for7.30pm Tuesdays to Saturdays, with 3pm matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. Booking is at Computicket.
