THE acclaimed Mary Poppins Returns may have left empty-handed and A Star is Born with precious little, but another of my recent film favourites, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, won 2019 Golden Globe Awards for best film (drama) and the lead performance of Egyptian actor Rami Malek, in his role as Queen singer Freddie Mercury.

The 76th annual awards, which ended a few hours ago, were co-hosted by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg and Canadian actress Sandra Oh, of Grey’s Anatomy fame, who won a Golden Globe for best actress in a TV series (drama), for her role in Killing Eve.

Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse was the surprise winner in the Best Animated Feature Film category, beating Isle of Dogs and Incredibles 2, while another surprise (although totally deserved) was Glenn Close taking the Best Actress in a Drama statuette for The Wife. Lady Gaga was the favourite to win, for her performance in A Star is Born.

Green Book beat Crazy Rich Asians, The Favourite, Mary Poppins Returns and Vice to take the award in the category of Best Film (Musical or Comedy).

The statuette for best director went to Alfonso Cuarón for his black-and-white feature, Roma, beating Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born),
Peter Farrelly (Green Book), Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman) and Adam McKay (Vice).
