ONE of Durban’s most successful festive season events last year – the enchanting Trail of Lights, which involves the city’s historic Botanic Gardens being illuminated with thousands of coloured lights, returns from December 14.

Even better news is that SoSuterBill has tickets for a family of four to take the park walk at no cost. See the end of this story for competition entry details.

An initiative in support of various charities, the event was a great success last year, so the organisers have decided to extend the run for 2018. The Trail of Lights will be available from 6.30pm to 9.30pm nightly, until December 30.

Besides a number of illuminated attractions, the event will also offer live music daily at the park’s lake area from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Also look out for Santa and his uniquely South African sleigh at the CROW Santa’s grotto, where fun photo opportunities will be available.

Also part of the spectacle will be magical Christmas characters, forest fairies, Santa’s elves, Mr Snowman, and the infamous Durban Botanic Gardens Talking Tree (that has a special message just for you), along with other fascinating creatures.

A Food Garden, offering local artisan food vendors, will also be available, along with the Tree of Light, where visitors will be encouraged to sponsor a light on the tree in remembrance of loved ones that have passed on.

Cupcake decorating, Pop Up stalls and education stations will also be part of the fun.

Africa’s oldest botanic gardens will be lit up with thousands of lights, loads of outdoor fun and festive activity. Following on from last year’s glittering success, the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust and event organisers have extended this fun-filled event to two weeks over the festive season, incorporating an even larger portion of the gardens.

No food or drinks will be permitted into the gardens, explains event organiser Alene Naidoo, pointing out that refreshments will be on sale in the gardens.

“The Trail of Lights is Durban’s best non-commercial Christmas event and gives members of the public an opportunity ‘to give something back’ during the season of giving, in a safe and secure environment,” she adds.

“Support the worthwhile work being done by KZN-based charities by visiting the kids’ activity garden with pop-up stalls, cupcake decorating and other education stations.”

This year’s charities include The Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow), Feeding the Furballs, Cupcakes of Hope and Tafta.

The Trail of Lights is also the Durban Botanic Gardens’ biggest annual fundraiser and proceeds go towards the upkeep and preservation of the gardens for visitors and future generations to enjoy.

Tickets cost R50 each if booked online at http://www.webtickets.co.za or a Pick n Pay Store (children under two get in free). Tickets will cost R70 at the park gate on the night, if tickets are still available, and early booking is advised as many had to be turned away at last year’s event.
