A NEW venue, The Globe, will open at Durban’s newly refurbished Suncoast Casino when Indian playback singer Krishna Kumar Kunnath, better known as KK, performs there on December 8.
KK, who has been delighting global audiences with his powerful, soulful voice for more than two decades, is being brought to the new venue by Blu Blood and Showtime Promotions.
“We are excited to be bringing out one of Bollywood’s all-time favourite playback singers. This will mark KK’s first performance in South Africa,” says the managing director of Blu Blood, Osman Osman.
“KK’s visit coincides with the completion of our developments at Suncoast,” adds Mike Dowsley, the casino’s executive director. “So it is fitting to have an artist of KK’s stature to celebrate the launch of The Globe to our patrons – and we look forward to hosting many more incredible events in our new venue.”
KK, a family man is recluse in his private life, preferring to spend time with his wife and two children. Which is why it is a treat to have him travel to South Africa.
“Many of my fellow performers have boasted about the beauty of South Africa and its people, which I am looking forward to experiencing,” he says.
On what fans can expect from KK, who started out singing jingles, he says: “I will be doing a mix of my songs, from the more upbeat to crooning the audience with more romantic numbers. I have a great show in store.”
Tickets, priced from R280, are available at Computicket.
Originally from Delhi, KK formed a rock band with friends and, in 1994, made Mumbai his home base, after which he went on to sing on more than 3500 jingles in 11 Indian languages.
Vishal Bhardwaj, who noticed his talent, gave him his break in Hindi cinema, and in 1999, KK bagged the Screen Award as Best Singer for his solo album.
During his career, he has sung close to 500 songs in Hindi, and more than 100 songs in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.
