HOW would you like to win a table for eight people to attend the opening night – at 8pm on Friday, October 5 – of Hot August Night, a Neil Diamond tribute show by The Reals band, at the Rhumbelow Theatre in  Cunningham Road, Umbilo?

It is sure to be a good night’s entertainment! For details on how to enter the competition, see the end of this story.

Hot August Night will be staged in Umbilo at 8pm on October 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20, with matinees on the Sundays, October 7, 14 and 21.

The show will also be staged at the Kloof branch of the Rhumbelow Theatre, at Tina’s Hotel, in Beryldene Road, from October 24 to 27 at 8pm, and on Sunday, October 28 at 2pm. Note, too, that Hot August Night is also scheduled to be performed at 8pm on November 24 and 2pm on November 25, at the Rhumbelow Theatre’s branch at the Allan Wilson Shellhole in Pietermaritzburg.

Headed by singer and lead guitarist Barry Thomson, The Reals also features keyboardist and musical director Dawn Selby, drummer Mali Sewell and bassist Jason Andrews, all of whom also sing.

Their tribute to Neil Diamond includes many of the hits that took the American singer-composer up world charts. He had 38 songs in the Top 10 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts, and has sold more than 125 million albums worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time.

Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. This year, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Included in the Hot August Night repertoire are all the Diamond sparklers –among them Cracklin’ Rosie, Song Sung Blue, Longfellow Serenade, America, Heartlight, Sweet Caroline and  I’m a Believer.

Book for any of the shows at Computicket outlets or by phoning Roland Stansell at 082 499 8636. Tickets cost R150 each (R130 for pensioners and students with cards). Also available is a Family Pack: R300 for two adults, with two chldren admitted free.

Durban and Pietermaritzburg venues opens 90 minutes before show for drinks (which must be bought at the theatre pub). Picnic baskets are permitted.

No food is permitted at the Tina’s Hotel theatre, where the venue opens 60 minutes before the show. Beverages have to be bought at the theatre pub and food is available at the hotel restaurant.
