Loads of laughs at Hilton festival

The Searle brothers, Ash and Brad, present two shows at this year’s Hilton Arts Festival.

A STRONG line-up of comedy has been planned for KwaZulu-Natal’s premier annual arts festival, the Hilton Arts Festival which, in its 26th  year, is to be hosted on the campus of Hilton College from September 14 to 16.

Some of the country’s most respected comedians will be on festival stages in an array of scripted, sketch-based, improv and stand-up shows over the weekend.

South African comedy icon John Vlismas hosts Crazy Funny, an ensemble stand-up comedy show which has him sharing the stage with Cape Town’s Rob van Vuuren and local comi- Kelvin Stoffels for 80 minutes of comedy entertainment. Catch them at 2.45pm on Saturday, September 15.

Another festival comedy bet is James Cairns Against Humanity which is described as great improvisational theatre.  Every show is different, funny and sometimes quite outrageous.  No-one knows where the story will go. Performances have been scheduled for 6.30pm on Friday, September 14, and 8pm on Saturday, September 15.

Durban comedian Jem Atkins,

Award-winning John Vlismas also presents his hit solo show, The Good Racist. As the curtain rises, he traces an intelligent, brilliantly funny and brutally honest line from the cradle of mankind to the present stupidity of Sparrows. See it at 8.30pm on the Friday and 5.30pm on the Saturday.

Whose Line?, an improv comedy show where four top comedians make everything up on stage is scheduled for noon on Sunday, September 16. It stars  John Vlismas, Rob van Vuuren and top Durban talents Jem Atkins and Masood Boomgaard.

Aaron McIlroy fans at the festival can look forward to his new show, titled ADHD, at 6.30pm on September 14 and 8.30pm on September 15.

The show sees the madcap embark on a wild journey into the fantastical world of learning disorders, a ‘gift’ he has lived with for the last half century.

Also of note are dancer brothers Ash and Brad Searle, directed by Vanessa Harris ,who present two amusing shows at the Hilton Arts Festival this year: Big Boys the Third (10am on September 16) and Caliente (8.30pm on September 14 and 6.15pm on September 15).

The festival would not be possible without the generous support of Hilton College, Tiso Black Star, Grindrod Bank, Black Coffee Design, DWR Distribution, Extreme Events, Bidvest Car Rental,  KZN Dept of Arts & Culture, Redlands Hotel, Assitej South Africa, Loud Crowd, Sappi,  BASA, Corona and Capital Media.
