A STAGE musical centred on the life and achievements of Michael Jackson is said to be Broadway-bound, while a film version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage success, Cats, is reportedly finally getting a green light.

Playbill reports that the Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage have given the nod to the project highlighting Jackson, who died at the age of 50 on June 25, 2009.

It has been further reported that a Broadway opening for the new musical is set for 2020, and that Christopher Wheeldon is lined up to direct and choreograph.

Wikipedia reports that the King of Pop made his professional debut in 1964 –with his elder brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon – as a member of The Jackson Five. He began his solo career in 1971 while at Motown Records and in the early 1980s, became a dominant figure in popular music, the site adds.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Working Title Films has pencilled in a November starting date for the filming of Cats in the UK. The movie is reportedly to be directed by 45-year-old Tom Hooper, whose credits include directing the Oscar-winning 2012 musical, Les Miserables.

Playbill reports that Olivier Award-winning Royal Ballet choreographer Wayne McGregor will choreograph the film, for which Lloyd Webber is said to be working on new material.

Cats, featuring the hit ballad Memory, is based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. It tells of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as “the Jellicle choice” to decide which cat will come back to a new life.
