DURBAN will wield a lot of comic clout this and next month, with three dates lined up at various venues for John Vlismas and others from May 30 to June 2, and the popular The Big 5 Comedy Show heading for the city for the first time, appearing at the Playhouse on June 29 and 30.
Vlismas, back in Durban by courtesy of On Fire Entertainment and Savanna Cider, recently returned from his Australian tour with South African Comedy All-Stars and The Good Racist.

Meanwhile, some of the biggest names in South African comedy are coming to The Playhouse at 8pm on June 29 and 30, when The Big 5 Comedy Show is presented by Taylormade Productions and supported by East Coast Radio and Comedy Central.
The lineup includes Nik Rabinowitz, Krijay Govender, Jason Goliath, Stuart Taylor and Kagiso Lediga, as well as DJ Ready D.
The Big 5 Comedy Show has been a sold-out comedy sensation in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, but has not been staged in Durban before.
“We put a lot of thought into making our line-ups as diverse as possible, ensuring that there is something for every taste” explained co-producer, Elisca Taylor.
“We also create a spectacular set, along with an amazing lighting design, which all adds to the theatre of the show. Added to this is the award-winning DJ Ready D who always manages to create an electric atmosphere.”
Comedian Stuart Taylor said this show lives in a slightly different space to the traditional ensemble show.
“There are only five acts on the line-up, so each of them gets to perform for a longer time than during your typical ensemble show. Therefore the audience gets to really experience more of each performer and it also allows each of the comics to really shine on stage”.
Tickets are available from Computicket or through the Playhouse Company Dial-A-Seat facility on (031) 369 9555. Tickets cost between R100 and R250. Please note that the show is restricted to over-16s.
