AS WAS the case last year, nine movies are in the running for this year’s Best Picture Oscar, and leading the pack with 13 nominations is the intriguing, elegant, enchanting fantasy fairytale for adults, The Shape of Water, which has garnered 13 nominations, followed by the war drama, Dunkirk, with eight.
The 90th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on March 4.
The academy permits the Best Picture category to have up to 10 or as few as five nominees, depending on how the organisation’s 8 400 members vote.
In competition for the coveted Best Picture statuette are: Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
For the first time since Kathryn Bigelow’s nomination for The Hurt Locker in 2010, the academy recognised a woman in the Best Director category. Greta Gerwig has been nominated in this category for Lady Bird, alongside Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Jordan Peele (Get Out) Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread) and Golden Globe Award-winner Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water).
Surprisingly, only three other women directors have been nominated for the director’s award to date: Lina Wertmuller for Seven Beauties, Jane Campion for The Piano and Sofia Coppola for Lost In Translation.
Also of note, and a victory for women, is that Rachel Morrison has become the first woman to be nominated in the category for best cinematography. She is nominated this year for her work on Mudbound.
Also of note this year is that Meryl Streep has earned a record 21st acting nomination for her role as a newspaper editor in The Post. Variety has reported that this year’s nominatuon extends Streep’s record by nine over Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson, who are tied in second place with a dozen each.
The widely acclaimed South African drama, Inxeba (The Wound), failed to make the final nominations list for Best Foreign Language Film, but South Africa was represented with Revolting Rhymes, produced by Triggerfish, which received a nomination in the category, Best Animated Short Film. The film is an adaptation of Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake’s classic book of fairytales.
Note that Johannesburg audiences will be able to see Revolting Rhymes at The Bioscope in Maboneng on February 16.
