PINETOWN’S Rainbow restaurant at 23 Stanfield Lane, in association with Concerts SA, presents its first concert for 2018 – Vusi Mkhize and his band – from 4pm on Saturday, January 13. Even better news is that it is free.

It has been years since singer and lead guitarist Mkhize, who will entertain with an eight-piece band, has performed at this venue.

Performers for the night will include Aristides Monique on second guitar, Mama Zing on drums, Mandala Zikalala on bass, Mthobisi Mthalane on keyboards, and Zama Ndozi , Zanele Zulu and  Zanele Mabaso on vocals.

Mkhize is an established guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer, originally from the Mpumalanga township near Hammarsdale in KwaZulu-Natal.

His music is a unique blend of African sounds – authentic contemporary South African music strongly influenced by traditional indigenous music. Each song rings out a different message but the common denominator is a message of peace and unity. The lyrics are based on the rich African culture in South Africa and forgotten truths.

Mkhize created a unique sound that he calls “Urban Afro Music” in which he has been inspired by such greats as Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Sipho Gumede, Busi Mhlongo, Salif Keita, Youssou n’dour, Baaba Maal and Fela Kuti.

THE BAND Black Wiskey, together with Rorke Kemp and the excellent Qadasi and Maqhinga, will entertain at a free concert at Northwood Crusaders sports club in Durban North, on Sunday, January 14.

Rorke is down to entertain from 1pm, followed by Black Wiskey at 3pnm and the hit duo at 5pm.

Also note that a special collaboration featuring Amber Liadan, Ant Cawthorn-Blazeby and Phil Moffett is planned for Durban’s Live@ St Clements gig at 7.30pm on Saturdya, January 13.The venue is at 191 Musgrave Road, tickets cost R100 each and booking is by calling 031 202 2511.

Sharing a common Celtic background, but from diverse sources, the three performers come together to share and communicate their passion for music in what promises to be a soulful, stellar performance.

Liadan has a pure, authentic sound, rooted in the rock and folk heritage of her musical parents (Heather Mac and Tim Parr, from ‘80s rock band, Ella Mental). Her sound influences are rock and reggae, supported by rustic, open pentatonic guitar tunings covering light and dark notes congruent with her powerful voice.

She has been living in London for the past three years, honing her craft as a musician and developing a strong fan base. In her career she has been support act for Steve Newman, Bill Knight, Tim Parr, Heather Mac, Robin Auld, Kindred Spirit, Time Flies and Native Young.
