FORMED in 2001 and reportedly not dissolved but on hiatus since 2012, colourful American music group Scissor Sisters, which sprang to fame with its 2002 disco version of Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb, has not been in the limelight for some while.

However, now it has been reported that not only will the group’s high-camp, toned and wild-dressing lead vocalist, Jake Shears, be releasing a debut solo album in 2018, he will also, come November 12, be performing his first new York show since 2012.

But the giant, bright-red cherry on the top is news that he will soon make his Broadway debut in the hit musical, Kinky Boots. It has also been reported that Kirstin Maldonado, of the vocal group Pentatonix, will be joining the stage musical in the role of Lauren, from February 2.

Playbill reports that singer-songwriter Shears, who turned 39 on October 3, will be filling the role of Charlie Price in the show which, featuring music and lyrics by ’80s pop heroine Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Feirstein, started out as a non-musical 2005 movie, apparently partly based on a true story.

The stage musical centres on Charlie Price inheriting a shoe factory from his father and forming an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen Lola. They produce a line of  high-heeled boots and save the business. In the process, Charlie and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.

Shears wrote on Twitter: “I’m coming to Broadway, baby. Couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that I’m joining the cast of Kinky Boots on Broadway from January 8 to April 1.

He added: “Holy moly I’m excited. This is gonna be fun!”

Shears’s Twttter page also reveals news of a debut solo single, Creep City, which is a teaser for his new album.

Shears, who wrote the music for the 2011 stage musical Tales of the City, was born Jason Sellards, in Mesa, Arizona, in 1975.

With Scissor Sisters, a pop-rock and dance band originally known as Dead Lesbian, Shears had the No 1 hit, I Don’t Feel Like Dancing, which featured Elton John on piano, and other hits including Fire With Fire, Laura and Lets Have a Kiki.
