A FUN puppet show for the young is being presented at Durban’s Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Road, off Bartle Road, Umbilo, this week.

Presented by Durban’s Mim Erasmus, the show is Seaside Suzy which will be followed by a short, puppet-making workshop. It is being staged at 10am daily until Friday, October 6.

“Auntie Mim will guide you through the process of making a puppet. You can bring along anything you like – a wooden spoon, a piece of cloth, a tin can, paper, anything ‘found’… and we will have fun making your own puppet, and making up stories for all of them to perform,” says Rhumbelow manager and entertainment co-ordinator Roland Stansell.

“Auntie Mim will also take you through the process of the making of one of her beautiful glove puppets, from finding the fabric, to sewing it, and putting the ‘character’ in as you go.”

“She and John will tell how they started out with a few puppets and a booth that he made, and worked up from there to the wonderful stories they have to tell, and all the characters in them nowadays.”

Seaside Suzy is a musical puppet pantomime with all the attributes of a large stage pantomime – good story, comedy, music and singing along, but on a smaller scale.

“Come along with Suzy and her friends as she spends a musical day at the seaside with her granny. She meets Roy, the Rainbow Boy, a shark, donkey and rabbit, as well as Christopher Crocodile.”

Mim and John have been touring their glove puppet pantomimes for 30 years, delighting children of all ages.

The show and workshop run for 90 minutes. Snacks and juices will be on sale.

Admission is R 60 (R50 each for four tickets for more). Book at Computicket or phone Roland at 082 499 8636.

Sticking with the Rhumbelow… note that the Pietermaritzburg branch, at the Allan Wilson Shellhole, will turn the spotlight on popular singer-pianist Cat Simoni at 2pm and 6.30pm on Sunday, October 8.

Simoni will present a show celebrating the music of French singer Francoise Hardy, whose hits include Catch a Falling Atar, Only You Can Do It, all Over the World and Only Friends. Tickets cost R150 each and booking is by calling Roland at 082 499 8636.

Note that the same show will be presented at the Rhumbelow’s Durban branch, in Umbilo, next weekend.
