GREAT news – this site has two sets of double tickets to give away to a top theatre event. The tickets (valued at R199 each) are for the 12.45pm performance on Sunday, September 17, of the award-winning musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a highlight of the 25th Hilton Arts Festival that runs at various Hilton College venues from September 15 go 17.

Competition details appear at the end of this story.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the must-see show of the festival which, as usual, offers a feast of theatre, music, art, crafts, food and other fun.

The show started out as a US movie musical and is now a globally acclaimed stage rock musical telling of a fictional rock ‘n’ roll band fronted by a transgender East German singer.

The South African production, directed by Elizma Badenhorst, premiered at Cafe 69 in Cape Town and, last year, collected Fleur du Cap Awards for Paul du Toit in the title role and Genna Galloway as the female lead.

A Tony Award-winning show, the musical is brilliantly innovative, heartbreaking and wickedly funny. It is a landmark musical that is undoubtedly ahead of its time; offering a pulsing score and great performances. The music is steeped in the androgynous 1970’s glam-rock style of David Bowie as well as the work of John Lennon and Iggy Pop.

The plot revolves around a stage musical about a fictional rock band fronted by an East German transgender singer who survives a botched sex change operation performed to allow her to marry an American man and escape East Germany, only to get dumped a few months later.

Hedwig subsequently develops a relationship with a younger man, Tommy, becoming his mentor and musical collaborator.  Tommy steals her music and moves on without her.

The musical follows Hedwig and her roadie as they shadow Tommy’s tour, while exploring Hedwig’s past and complex gender identity.

Performances of Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Hilton Arts Festival have been scheduled for 8.30pm on the Friday and Saturday of the festival weekend, September 15 and 16, and at 12.45pm on the Sunday, September 17. Ticket cost R199 each and booking is open at tickets@hiltoncollege.com
