POP superstar Katy Perry will host the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards that will be broadcast on MTV (DStv’s channel 130), live from the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California, at 2am on Monday, August 28, with a repeat at 9.30pm that day.

This comes in advance of the world tour for Perry’s most recent, chart-topping album, Witness. She has also secured a spot as one of the top nominees for the 2017 VMAs with nods in five categories: Best Pop, Best Direction and Best Visual Effects for Chained to the Rhythm, Best Art Direction for Bon Appetit, and Best Collaboration for Calvin Harris’s Feels, featuring Pharrell Williams, Perry and Big Sean.

“I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson,” said Perry. “Come August, I’ll be ready to be your Moonwoman. Brace for impact, kids.”

Leading the pack of the nominations for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards is rapper Kendrick Lamar, with eight nominations for his video, Humble. Katy Perry and The Weeknd are tied for five nominations each.

Building on the critical acclaim of the non-gendered categories at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, the network has announced the former Best Female Video and Best Male Video categories have been combined for Artist of the Year. Additionally, a category called Best Fight Against the System has been added to celebrate videos that inspire viewers to stand up and fight injustice.

To add African flair to the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Africa and Smirnoff will be travelling to the ceremony with choreographer and television personality Somizi Mhlongo who will cover the red carpet. His coverage will be showcased in a show dubbed United States of Somizi, which will air at a later date on the channel.

Bruno Mars… nominated for the Artist of the Year award.

Fans can now vote for their favorites across eight VMA categories, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration and more by visiting www.vma.mtv.com.
