The final art documentary of the Cinema Nouveau Exhibition on Screen series. The film takes a journey through the great chapels and museums of Florence, Rome and the Vatican, to the print and drawing rooms of Europe, to explore Michelangelo’s tempestuous life.

DER ROSENKAVALIER ****

The film of the New York Metropolitan Opera’s first new staging of this Strauss opera since 1969. Screenings will be at the Ster-Kinekor complex at Gateway in Umhlanga, as well as at Nouveau cinemas in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town. Final screenings are scheduled for 6pm on June 20 and 11.30am on June 21. The opera has a dream cast including Renee Fleming, singing in her final performances of one of her signature roles as the Marschallin, and Elīna Garanča, in her Met role debut as the Marschallin’s young lover, Octavian.

Israeli model and actress Gal Godot stars as Amazon princess Diana in this glossy sci-fi spectaclewhich has her, in the early 20th century, living on the island of Themyscira. After learning from him about the ongoing events of World War 1, leaves her home for London in a bid to bring an early end to the war. Director Patty Jenkins previously directed 2003’s Monster.

A romantic drama centred on a man called Madhav, who meets a girl named Riya and falls in love. After struggling to convince her to be his girlfriend, she half heartedly agrees to be his “half girlfriend”. The film is based on a novel by Chetan Bhagat.

CAT SIMONI: JUST ME AND ELTON

Excellent singer-pianist Cat Simoni pays tribute to the hits of Elton John in this show devised and directed by Paul Spence. The venue opens 90 minutes before the performance for a bring-your-own meal (light meals and snacks can also be bought at the theatre). Patrons are not permitted to take their own drinks, and must use the cash bar available. Book at Computicket or phone Roland at 082 499 8636. Performances are at 2pm and 6.30pm on Sunday only. (BS)

TRIBUTE TO ELLA FITGERALD AND ERROL GARNER

THOMSON VERSES THOMSON

Husband and wife, singere-guitarist Barry Thomson and singer-keyboardist Calli Thomson, unite for this laidback entertainment in which they trade memories and playful insults. The show title’s musical pun is totally intended. The show includes a couple of clever mash medleys portraying conversations – and arguments – between couples in bands and couples in real life too. Expect hits associated with Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Shania Twain, Kate Bush, Kid Rock, Sting, Supertramp, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Bryan Adams and Bonnie Raitt.
