Top local comics for fund-raiser

Aaron McIlor joins John Vlismas and Jem Atkins at Durban’s Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on June 26.

THREE of Durban’s most popular and talented comedians – Durban-born John Vlismas, Aaron McIlroy and Jem Atkins – are pooling their talents at no cost for a once-off show at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.

They are doing so to help raise funds for medical costs for Durban theatre personality Themi Venturas, who has pancreatic cancer.

Titled An Evening of Chemody, the show will be performed at 7.30pm on Monday, June 26. Tickets cost R225, and advance booking is possible through Computicket, who are waiving all commission costs to support this cause.

Funny man John Vlismas.

Call 0861 915 8000 or visit, or buy tickets directly at any Checkers Money Market Counter.  There will also be door sales on the night, subject to availability.

Vlismas and McIlroy have been making people laugh really hard for decades. They are old friends and have something else in common.  Both did extensive work early in their careers with the legendary Themi Venturas.

Joining John and Aaron is another superb local comic, Jem Atkins, who is possibly as talented,  but said to be much better looking than both of them.

“What better way for Durban to rally and get Themi the treatment he needs than these three lunatics doing the stand-up comedy that has made them household names, and then answering questions from the audience and recounting stories of their most ridiculous experiences on and off stage?,” says a spokesman.

“Many people have no idea how funny it is when performers share horror stories with each other, and now you have the chance to hear it straight from the source.

“This will be a night to remember, with hilarious comedy and an intimate, honest and meaningful look behind the curtain at what the show looks like from the other side.”

“We are not spending any money – it’s all going to the medicine,” says John, “there are no posters, no flyers, no frills. I’m very excited to be raising money for drugs than

Durban comic Jem Atkins.

an actual doctor prescribed…  it’s a first.”

“That’s true, but we will have jokes,” says Aaron, “and you will get a seat – if you book soon.”
