AFTER four years in development Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette has finally announced firm plans for a stage musical adaptation of her 1995 Grammy-winning album, Jagged Little Pill.

The collection, which spawned the hits You Oughta Know and Hand in My Pocket, received five Grammys, including that for Album of the Year.

Online reports have it that the musical adaptation, also presumably to be titled Jagged Little Pill, will have its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Performances will begin in May 2018, it has been stated, and the production will be in the hands of that theatre’s artistic director, Diane Paulus, who received Broadway’s coveted Tony Award for directing Pippin in 2013.

The Morissette musical will feature a book by talented Diablo Cody, who won an Academy Award for her screenplay of Juno, and orchestrations and arrangements will reportedly be by Tom Kitt, the Tony-winning and Pulitzer-winning co-composer of Next to Normal and If/Then.

Playbill reports that the original story will follow a modern, multi-generational family and will explore gender identity and race.

Morissette said in a statement that the staging was “a dream come true”.

“The chemistry between all of us is crackling, and I feel honoured to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.”

Other news from America is that Disney is creating a new musical production of Beauty and the Beast, inspired by the success of the recent live-action film version of the show.

Songs from the 1991 originalm as well as How Does a Moment Last Forever? and Days in the Sun, from the current Beauty and the Beast film, are being used in the premiere production to be staged, in a music box setting with LED backdrops, on the Disney Dream cruise ship later this year.
