Setting new Oscar records

AFTER backlashes about the lack of black talent among the annual Academy Award nominations in recent years, this year’s Oscars race shows a remarkable turn of events.

Among those nominated in acting categories at the 89th annual Academy Awards are the wonderful Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Ruth Negga, Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali and Octavia Spencer.

Also of note this year is that the widely acclaimed La la Land, which cleaned up at the recent Golden Globe Awards, has attracted 14 nominations – a record it shares with 1997’s Titanic and 1950’s All About Eve.

And, once again, marvellous Meryl Streep has broken her own record – her title role in the glorious Florence Foster Jenkins has earned her her 20th acting nomination. Her closest rivals are Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson with 12 nominations each.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will be presented at Los Angeles’s Dolby Theatre on February 26. This is the full list of nominations:
