VOCAL coaching, audition preparation, weekly extramural classes for people aged five to 18, as well as training in musical theatre and masterclass workshops – all are offered at Durban Actors Studio.

Situated on the first floor of the building on the corner of Albert Terrace and Southampton Street, on the Point Waterfront, the studio was established last year, and offers industry-recognised training programmes to adults and children.

The studio was established by Gill Brunings as RSPA Theatre School in 2007, and has since produced students who have performed at the Playhouse, uShaka Marine World and the Hilton Arts Festival.

“We are a registered examination centre for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LADMA), They have received a 100% pass rate for students entered into the internationally recognised exams, and as a natural development have introduced the  Trinity College UK ATCL Examination programme, for ages 18 and up,” says Brunings.

“The newly launched ATCL exam programme is set to guide a handful of selected students through the rehearsal and study process necessary to undertake the QCF certified ATCL examination in 2017.”

Students of all levels of experience can also register for part-time evening classes.  For beginners, these classes are an introduction to acting technique in a fun group class. For students at the intermediate to advanced level, who have had previous training and performance experience, the Accelerated Acting exam class culminates in a LAMDA Acting Bronze or Gold Medal exam.

The studio has written, cast, directed and choreographed work for uShaka Marine World, most notably the Dolphins By Starlight Festive Fusion and Monster’s Ball Halloween Show.

“We want students to create new, engaging pieces of theatre. We want them to create a sustainable career; to be a new generation of theatre-goers who support the arts in all its varied forms,” says Brunings.
